EUR/USD hits record highs in years, despite strong PCE data, the dollar still struggles

The Euro (EUR) rose for the eighth consecutive day against the US dollar (USD) on Friday as the dollar was under pressure under the www.xmh100.combined effect of political and economic headwinds. U.S. President Trump's criticism of Fed Chairman Jerome Powell has once again intensified, with geopolitical tensions easing and a series of mixed U.S. economic data pushing market expectations of the Fed rate cut, which puts pressure on the dollar.

Euro/USD rose slightly by 0.20% on the day, reaching its highest level since September 2021 at 1.1754. At the time of writing, the pair hovered around 1.1726 during the U.S. trading session.

At the same time, the US dollar index (DXY) continued to decline, although Friday's price trend was roughly sideways consolidating, and the index found support above 97.00, affected by the positive inflation data of core personal consumption expenditure (PCE).

The PCE price index in May rose 0.1% month-on-month, consistent with the growth rate and market expectations in April. However, the core PCE index — the indicator the Fed is closely watching — rose 0.2% in the month, exceeding expectations and previous values. On an annual basis, core PCE accelerated from a revised 2.6% to 2.7%, showing continued potential inflation, bringing www.xmh100.complexity to the Fed's decision to cut interest rates.

Nevertheless, the market responded to rising inflation in a modest way, and instead focused more on the overall slowdown in economic activity. The U.S. economy contracted 0.5% in the first quarter of 2025, the first decline in three years, while consumer spending and personal income also showed signs of weakness. Sluggish growth www.xmh100.combined with political pressure on the Fed, strengthening the reasons for policy relaxation in the www.xmh100.coming months.

Cras Nott, a member of the European Central Bank (ECB) governing www.xmh100.committee, sent a cautious signal on Friday that the current interest rate – now seen as neutral – is “a good level.” Although he did not rule out the possibility of another rate cut, Nott stressed that inflation risks are "two-way" and that the ECB may "need to keep interest rates unchanged for some time." His remarks highlighted data dependence and further strengthened the central bank's view that it was not in a hurry to relax further after the rate cut in June.

Reflecting this cautious position, the swap market continues to expect a 25 basis point rate cut in the next 12 months, and the policy interest rate is expected to bottom out at around 1.75%.

Looking forward, Euro/USD traders will focus on the preliminary data on euro zone inflation next week and the release of the US ISM Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) to obtain further directional clues. If the breakthrough of 1.1745 continues to open the door to the psychological barrier of 1.1800.
