WTI, crude oil cuts earlier gains as it watches Plax bankruptcy switches to OPEC+ supply outlook

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) continued to trade in a narrow range on Monday, and as of writing, the U.S. crude oil benchmark price was still below $65.00 per barrel.
A more unexpected development on Monday came from the UK. Prax Group, an independent British energy www.xmh100.company, has reportedly filed for bankruptcy.
The www.xmh100.company owns and operates the Lindsay Refinery, a key facility in northeast England that plays an important role in regional fuel supply.
While the refinery mainly deals with crude oil related to Brent crude, its potential shutdown or production cuts pose a risk to the supply of refined oil in Northwest Europe, especially diesel and gasoline.
In contrast, market attention remains focused on supply expectations from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC+).
The organization is expected to approve an additional 411,000 barrels per day in August.
These output increases will bring the cumulative increase this year to about 1.8 million barrels per day. Major OPEC+ producers, including Saudi Arabia, Russia and the UAE, are scheduled to hold a meeting via video conference on July 6 to finalize the quota for August and further production increases are reportedly discussed.
The improved geopolitical situation also has an impact on market sentiment. A recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran eased concerns about the wider supply disruption in the Middle East, effectively eliminating many of the “geopolitical risk premiums” that were priced in the oil market at the beginning of the year.
WTI crude oil: technical outlook remains bearish below $65.00
From a technical point of view, WTI fell from January to AprilThe 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level was found near $64.18.
The current direct support is at the psychological level of $64.00. If the downside breaks, it will open the potential of retesting the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) of $63.35.
Failed to maintain above the 100-day SMA, coupled with the recent narrow range candlestick chart, indicating consolidation near the support level rather than an immediate rebound. If it falls below the June 24 low of $63.73, it may trigger a further downward trend, with the target pointing to the 23.6% Fibonacci level $60.59.
As long as supply concerns remain sluggish, upward action energy appears to be limited, the 100-day SMA provides short-term resistance around $65.45.
Above this is the 50% retracement level of $67.08, followed by the 200-day SMA at $68.29.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently below the neutral 50 and is at 46, indicating a lack of strong bullish momentum.
