The British Pound (GBP) weakened against the Japanese Yen (JPY) on Monday, falling below the 198.00 mark as a slight correction from the year-high of 198.81 set on Friday. The pound lost its advantage over major currency pairs early this week.

The GBP/JPY remained flat in U.S. trading, hovering around 197.70 at press time, rebounding from the intraday low of 197.21 touched earlier in the day. The pair consolidated after a sharp rebound last week, with investors reassessing the UK's macroeconomic situation and global risk sentiment.

In terms of data, the UK economy grew 0.7% in the first quarter — the highest increase in a year — while the annual growth rate remained at 1.3%. However, real household income fell 1.0%, the biggest drop since early 2023, with the savings rate falling to 10.9%, reflecting financial pressure on consumers. Meanwhile, the current account deficit expanded to £23.46 billion, far higher than expected.

In Japan, industrial output rose 0.5% month-on-month in May, rebounding from a 1.1% contraction in April, but well below the expected 3.4% increase. On a year-on-year basis, output fell by 1.8%, marking the first annual decline in five months, reversing the 0.5% growth in April — a sign that Japan's manufacturing recovery remains fragile.

From a technical point of view, the GBP/JPY confirmed to break through the rising triangle pattern with the upper boundary around 196.00–196.50. Although the pair consolidated after hitting its year-high 198.81 on Friday, as long as it remains at the uptrend line and the 21-day exponential moving average(EMA) above 196.31, the structure remains bullish. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) fell back to 60, indicating that momentum was paused while MACD was still in the bullish area, although momentum weakened.

If it continues to break through 199.00, it may trigger a breakthrough toward the psychological threshold of 200.00, and if it falls below 196.30, it will invalidate the bullish pattern and expose the downward risk to 194.00.
